Awards and Recognition

Dr. Erin Cameron, Assistant Professor, received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for her project, Exploring AI Tools for Researchers in Northern Ontario. The Research Development Grant is provided to enhance scholarly productivity, by Unit 1 OPSEU 677 members at NOSM University. 

Dr. Jo-Anne Clarke, Assistant Professor, was named a 2023 Order of Ontario Appointee on January 1, 2024. Dr. Clarke is the first geriatrician in Northeastern Ontario and is described as “a transformational trailblazer and true visionary.” 

Lauren Hamill has received a 2024 Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Student Award in Medical Education Research, which goes to support medical students in their pursuit of research experiences. The work will be done under the supervision of Dr. Gayle Adams-Carpino for her project Screening for Intimate Partner Violence During Pregnancy: Measuring Attitudes and Perceptions of Physicians in Northern Ontario. 

Dr. Geoffrey Hudson, Associate Professor, received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for his project, Disabled Persons, Health, and Social Policy in Canada and New Zealand, a comparative study, c. 1975-1995.

Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, Associate Professor, was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Scotland. This prestigious international fellowship recognizes clinical achievements, confers international peer recognition, and offers enhanced professional opportunities that help Fellows contribute to setting standards and influencing policy. 

Kaila Jodoin was awarded the Nina Mehta Underserviced Population Recognition Award at the University of Toronto Occupational Therapy departmental convocation awards after completing three of her fieldwork placements working with underserved communities in Northern Ontario through NOSM University. 

Dr. Naana Jumah, Assistant Professor, received the 2023 Carl Nimord Educator Award. The Award recognizes outstanding achievement within the field of education in obstetrics and gynecology. 

Dr. Richard Kvas, Associate Professor, was awarded Regional Family Physician of the Year from the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP). 

Dr. Kara Nadeau, resident, received the 2024 Rising Star Certificate of Excellence for a resident from the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME). 

Dr. Laura Noack, Assistant Professor, was awarded Regional Family Physician of the Year from the OCFP.

Dr. Yasser Noureldin, Assistant Professor, was recognized among the top ten reviewers for the Canadian Urological Association Journal for 2023. 

Nusha Ramsoondar, medical student, received the Medical Student of the Year Award from the OCFP and the 2024 Rising Star Certificate of Excellence for a medical student from CAME. 

Dr. Maurianne Reade, Associate Professor, received the 2024 CAME Certificate of Merit Award. 

Dr. Anne Robinson, Associate Professor, received the 2024 CAME Certificate of Merit Award. 

Dr. Brian Ross, Professor, received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for his project, A pilot investigation of the role of psychological trauma in the etiology and treatment of Hallucinogen Persisting Perceptual Disorder. 

Dr. Gregory Ross, Assistant Professor, received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for his project, A wing strut adaptor for mounting an external infrared sensor to NOSM U’s Cessna 172 research aircraft. 

Mackenzie Senior, medical student, received the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) 150th Anniversary Award. 

Dr. TC Tai, Assistant Dean, Research and Professor, is the recipient of the René Guilbeault Research Award, which goes to a full-time faculty member for medical research, for his project The role of estrogen on adrenaline synthesis and hypertension. Dr. Tai also received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for his project, Role of Complement Factors in the Regulation of Adrenal Function. 

Dr. Sujeenthar Tharmaling, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Natalie Lefort received a 2023-2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for their project, Investigating the role of isoprostanes in breast cancer radiotherapy. 

Dr. Marina Ulanova, Professor, received a 2023- 2024 NOSM University Research Development Grant for her project, Inflammatory responses to non-encapsulated (non-typeable) Haemophilus influenzae clinical isolates from invasive and non-invasive infections. 

Dr. Barb Zelek, Division Head, Clinical Sciences and Professor, received the 2024 CAME Certificate of Merit Award. 

NOSM University has received the Prix de l’Engagement communautaire from the Societé Santé en français, a national award which recognizes success ensuring quality services for the Francophone community in a minority-language context.
